Today is October 1, the day this is being written, a special day in numerous ways including being my wife’s, Mary Anne, birthday. Our two daughters, Theresa and Beth, along with Theresa’s husband Lance, and Beth’s daughter Kathryn, the Birthday Lady and I will gather at Theresa and Lance’s home for a Chilly-Cheese Dog/Birthday Cake/Outdoor Movie complete with popcorn Night. Beth’s husband Greg is overseeing a project along the Texas/Mexico border. Our four grandsons are scattered from Texas to somewhere in an Army camp in Europe. They will be there in spirit and photos. I’m certain it will be a grand evening!

October 1 too, officially starts my fall hunting season! I spent yesterday at my place in northern Colorado County (Texas) checking the sight-in on a 7mm Remington Magnum, topped with a Trijicon 3-18×50 AccuPoint scope and shooting Hornady’s Precision Hunter 162-grain ELD-X bullets. My rifle range is a work in progress, but complete with a solid bench built from cedar posts and boards from dog houses my dad built in the 1950’s. The rifle is one I am borrowing from Dave Fulson, who will be the cameraman on my pronghorn hunt with Greg Simon’s Wildlife Systems. I will be hunting the same property I hunted in 2019, where I shot a 17.5-inch pronghorn, my longest to date. Truly looking forward to spending time with Dave!

The hunt is being filmed for the “Trijicon’s World of Sports Afield” television show, produced by Safari Classics. This is a first for me, and one I am truly excited about! I have been involved in outdoor television since the middle 1980’s. During the years hence I have hosted, co-hosted, owned and produced numerous awarding-winning outdoor productions including my most recent “DSC’s Trailing the Hunter’s Moon” which I have “done” for the past ten or so years. As of December, I am leaving the long-running show, other than in re-airs on digital platforms. In an ensuing “article” I will explain more fully. We have two other hunts planned to be filmed this fall for “Sports Afield.”

On the pronghorn hunt I will also be filming some of the proceedings for “A Sportsman’s Life”, a weekly outdoor presentation I do with Jeff Rice and Luke Clayton (with whom I also do a weekly radio segment, and the twice-monthly “Hunting Wire Radio”) which airs on Pride Outdoor Network and YouTube. Our “down home show” is growing in popularity in leaps and bounds!

Another first is I am going to be hunting with a 7mm Remington Magnum. Over the years I have hunted with a variety of 7mm (.284) rounds including 7mm STW, 7mm Weatherby Magnum, .280 Ackley Improved, .280 Remington, 7×57, 7mm-08 and a few .284 wildcats, but never before the popular 7mm Rem Mag. Why? Likely because with handloading Hornady bullets I could get near 7mm Rem Mag performance out of my .280s.

I will let you know how the hunt goes.
