Don’t Miss the Hunter’s Moon Tonight

We don’t just mean an episode of Larry Weishuhn and Blake Barnett’s “DSC’s Trailing the Hunter’s Moon.”

The full moon in tonight’s sky is officially called the Hunter’s Moon.

Each month has a unique name for the full moon, which has been shaped and shifted through various cultures over centuries.

Many of the names are reminiscent of Native American nomenclature and how they tracked time. Those names passed on to colonial Americans, and nicknames stuck over centuries when the calendar system developed.

For the Hunter’s moon, this October full moon reminded Native Americans to hunt in anticipation for the winter months.

With several seasons opening and closing around the fall, it is no surprise that the October name stuck.

Other nicknames for October’s full moon include Travel Moon and the Dying Moon.
